Macclesfield finished their first National One season in style as they ran in seven tries to beat league runners-up Barking.

Their 17th win of the season left them in fourth place with an impressive total of 95 points, and also wiped out last week’s defeat at rivals Sedgley Park.

Director of rugby Geoff Wappet said: "I was disappointed last week but today the lads played superbly in what was a tough game, I was really pleased we won, and we won well."

The Blues made the better start to the game and it took just nine minutes for them to take the lead when Ross Winney converted a penalty from close range.

Barking responded by immediately taking the game to Macc, but superb work from centre Matt Simpson turned the ball over. It led to another Macclesfield penalty 25 yards from goal, which Winney once again converted.

Simpson was again involved just four minutes later when neat play from the home team on the wing allowed him to touch down in the corner for Macc’s first try of the game to put them 11-0 up.

Then, with just five minutes left in the half, the Blues’ pressure again paid off when, after impressive work from the pack, captain Evan Stewart carried the ball over. Winney added the extras to send Macc in at the break 18-0 up.

Barking hit back at the start of the second half, Lee Griffiths burst through the Blues backline to score with kicker Henry Staff converting.

But Macclesfield responded immediately to quash any thoughts of a comeback when winger Matt O’Reagan finished a fine team move to score Macc’s third try of the game, converted by Winney.

To their credit, Barking continued to attack Macclesfield and they were rewarded in the 53rd minute when Will Nelson scored their second try of the afternoon, although Staff was unable to convert.

But after that it was all Macc. First, lock Alan Marsh went over on 55 minutes, and on the hour replacement Ryan Parkinson capitalised on further pressure from the Macc forwards to extend the lead to 37-12.

In the closing stages Charlie Mulchrone and Winney added two more tries, though Winney was only able to convert one of them, and with the score at 49-12 Macclesfield called time on what has been a season to remember for all associated with the club.
