Macclesfield Lions went back to the top of the Bateman BMW Premier League with a 43-0 victory at Broughton Park.

Due to the recent weather this was their first game since December 5 and despite some doubts about the match going ahead the pitch was in excellent condition.

The Lions attacked their opponents and started the game exceptionally well. They scored three times in the opening 10 minutes as the home side struggled to cope with their intensity.

For the opener Davenport drew the defence before offloading to McDermott who touched down. On six minutes veteran hooker Taylor intercepted, kicked ahead and won the race to add a second and, on 10 minutes, Kanauros made the incisive break to put away Keep who gleefully slid in. Macey converted twice and the Lions were 19-0 ahead.

To Park’s credit they upped their performance to ensure the game remained competitive. The Lions were also guilty of some over elaboration and rustiness which meant they became a little impatient. Just before the break the Lions put together a solid passage of play, culminating in Davenport receiving possession in space and at pace. He waltzed over and Macey’s extras put the Lions 26-0 ahead at the break.

The second half was also competitive with Park having a number of good situations but the Lions were keen to keep their line intact and defended with commendable vigour. They also created a number of opportunities for themselves and scored another three tries. Five minutes into the half Davies touched down following an astute kick ahead from Coote. Kanauros then scored a converted try on the hour mark following a prolonged and controlled passage of play from the forwards.

Finally, as the whistle approached, Laing put the returning Roberts clear and he touched down.

Given their inactivity this was a good display from the Lions against a decent Park side. Coote just about edged a number of candidates for MOM and it was pleasing to see Robinson, Hall and Allen all come through unscathed following their lengthy injury breaks.

The Lions return to Priory Park to host Waterloo this Saturday.
