Macclesfield suffered defeat in London as Esher made the most of their chances while the Blues wasted most of theirs.

The game unfortunately ended in a third Macclesfield loss as they continue their search for a first win of the new campaign.

The home side took an early lead through Mickey Wilson’s penalty in the second minute for a Blues infringement at the breakdown.

Esher then added a try to their score on 10 minutes through a quickly-taken penalty which caught the Macc defence napping, Cameron Gentles establishing a 10-0 lead.

Macclesfield then settled into the match and responded through winger Matt King, a brilliantly worked move from the backs ending in King dancing his way through and getting them off the mark.

But Esher restored their grip on the game after King’s score and were camped on the Blues line for a prolonged period. They added another converted try on the half-hour mark, with good work from winger Ollie Richards to out-pace the recovering back line and send Andy Wright in.

Both teams were looking settled at this stage and Macclesfield were playing very clever rugby, Tom Eaton had his kicking boots on and had the hosts bogged down in their own half for periods of the first half.

The Blues were then reduced to 14 men, King the unlucky man to be shown a yellow card after a number of infringements wore the referee’s patience thin.

Esher made the most of the extra man and were keeping possession within the Macclesfield half.

The home team’s pack was dominating and forcing errors from the Macclesfield forwards. The pressure was beginning to tell and as the scrum was going backwards, the referee marched under the posts and awarded the penalty try, Wilson’s conversion making it 24-5.

Towards the end of the half Macclesfield put real pressure on the Esher defence despite being a man and 19 points down, but Esher defended well.

Despite that deficit at the break the Blues looked very much in the game, even though they went in well in arrears.

Just seven minutes into the second half Esher secured their try-scoring bonus point, turning over a Macclesfield scrum to allow number eight Brandon Walker to canter in for the score.

King scored his second try of the afternoon but Esher’s full-back Spencer Sutherland then touched down twice in quick

succession, showing blistering pace to speed away after being put into the gap by a fellow back three member.

That try made the score 36-10 with half an hour to play.

The speed of Esher told again when Sutherland completed a break and out-paced the back line once again.

Macclesfield replied six minutes later through some good play from the forwards which saw captain Mike Finnemore score the try and leave Macc one away from a bonus point.  But as they applied the pressure they were caught on the break by Esher and Harrison Collins ran in unopposed after intercepting a wayward pass at the back of a scrum.

With the final play of the game Esher added insult to injury by adding another score through Paul Olima and painting a slightly unjust picture of a game that Macclesfield deserved more from.

The game finished 53-15 and the Blues go into this weekend against Hartpury College still in search of their first win.
