Macclesfield coach Geoff Wappett says that the three points from a draw with Ealing was a fair reward for the Blues’ efforts on Saturday.

Macclesfield rescued a 34-34 draw with a Ross Winney penalty deep into added time and Wappett insists that going for the two so late in the game was the right decision.

"It’s not often you score 34 points in a game and don’t win," he said. "Everybody went home happy – some said we should have won the game but we had to take the kick and come away with something."

Two points in arrears, the Blues had camped out on the promotion-chasers’ line at the game’s conclusion and the coach added: "We were pressuring them and hadn’t scored for about 10 minutes so there was a risk in going for the win, we may not even have had time to get over and it was a straightforward penalty.

"Ross never turns his back on a chance to become a hero as well! He’s won – and lost – us games with late kicks but I’m a pragmatist and three points were staring at us in the face."

Macclesfield have a weekend off over Easter but will fly south to National League One leaders Jersey the following week.

THE Priory Park club’s second XV have a Raging Bull Cup semi-final on Saturday, in which they will host Birkenhead Park.
