Macclesfield Rugby Club has been left at the mercy of the weather this weekend as matches throughout the club and in the National League One were postponed due to the icy conditions.

The Blues were due to travel  to Cambridge on Saturday in a battle of the bottom two and, with nine points separating the sides, it would have made for a fiercely competitive display of rugby as the two teams look to escape the relegation zone.

The match is to be replayed on February 23, which now gives the Blues an interesting run of fixtures next month.

The Blues will travel down to Rosslyn Park on the 2nd, a  difficult place to go, especially as Park scored 16 tries past Cambridge at home two weeks ago.

Then Macclesfield host Sedgley Park in a game that was supposed to go ahead before Christmas – a match equally as important to get a result in as victory would mean 14th place.

And finally on the 16th the Blues travel to Loughborough Students, who have managed to secure some unlikely wins to keep them safe so far this season, although Macclesfield will be looking to exact revenge after losing out on a draw in the closing moments of the game in the home fixture back in October.

Captain and fly-half Tom Eaton was delighted with the win last weekend and maintains that the side has the belief and ability to make their way back up the table.

He said: “It was brilliant to get the result against Cinderford, a good win but a good performance as well. For much of the game we played some of the best rugby we have this year.

“Although we let them back in a bit at the end, we got the result and hopefully that will give us the confidence to go up against other sides, especially considering Cinderford have been to Rosslyn Park and beaten them.

“We’ve already been down to Rosslyn Park and won there a few years ago. They’re riding high now but we went to Ealing a few weeks ago and pushed them and I think we’ll be a lot better against Park than we were against Ealing.

“Dean Williams has got a few games under his belt and is looking really strong, Tom Davenport looked good as well.

“The game against Cinderford was the first time we’ve had a full-strength side out and we showed that when we’ve got that side we can beat anyone in this league.

“Rosslyn Park will be a difficult game but for them as well. Home games against strugglers are sometimes the most difficult games, when you’re expected to win.

“We’ve got to instil some real drive and belief in ourselves but balancing that with working incredibly hard and getting it completely right.

“There’s a long way to go but it’s encouraging to see a real spring in everyone’s step.

“I’d have preferred to play the game against Cambridge this weekend but it’s the nature of the game. We’ve got to keep fit and be professional – no matter the weather – and I see this as an opportunity to condition my fitness.”

This week the Blues take on eighth-place Coventry at Priory Park, who have already proven to be tough opposition in the reverse fixture which ended in a 38-3 defeat for Geoff Wappett’s men.

Coventry have won their last three games and travel up to Macclesfield in good form.

However they were beaten in December by struggling Sedgley Park 19-17.

Also coming up in the next few weeks will be a Special General Meeting on February 5 that all members are encouraged to attend.

The meeting will look at the possibility of being involved in council plans to relocate the club to gain improved facilities; more information can be found at the Macclesfield Rugby Club website. If you can’t make it down to Priory Park for the game on Saturday, follow live Twitter updates
