CYCLING: IN ONLY his third road race, Chris Quin won the latest round of the TLI Cheshire series at Lower Withington last week.

Quin was lucky to avoid a crash when one of the group hit a pothole and, with the strong wind discouraging any further attacks, was ideally placed when the final sprint started crossing the line a bike length clear for a very convincing win.

On the time trial scene, Claire Logan marked her return to racing after 10 months away by riding three events in the space of a week.

Fastest

On Wednesday, she was the fastest lady in the Club 10-mile series with 26:24, on Thursday she recorded 28:21 in the Manchester Wheelers 10 on the very tough Lower Withington course (won by the Wheelers’ Lewis Burke in 23:41) and on Saturday she took an excellent fourth place in the Manchester and District Ladies Cycling Association 10 at Chelford.

Logan and Carole Sherrin secured the team prize for the Wheelers.

Roger Wrenn travelled to Yorkshire to ride the Team Swift 50 mile event between Tuxford and Gonerby.

Conditions were dreadful with strong gusting wind and hailstorms.

Wrenn started 12 seconds late, but still recorded 2:00.12 to win the prize for fastest veteran on standard with a massive ‘plus’ of 44.51.

Conditions were equally poor for the Stone Wheelers 25 at Uttoxeter.

Adam Bailey continued his run of good form with an excellent time of 56:11, over two minutes ahead of Dave Higham. Warren Jackson celebrated his forthcoming marriage by beating the hour for the first time this season with 59.58.

Kevin Walford recorded his second win in the Club 10 series on Wednesday with an excellent 23:24 in the very windy conditions.

Warren Jackson was second, just under a minute behind, with Pete McGuckien third with 25:17.

That result means that Walford now leads the overall competition from Neil Morris and Paul Threfall.

Morris still leads the handicap competition from Pete Stock and Paul Bethall.
