MACCLESFIELD based Thai boxing star Stephen Primrose is celebrating winning the world championship, taking a memorable win despite a pre-match bombshell.

Primrose, the senior instructor at the Macclesfield Chi Centre in Chestergate, already held the British and European Full Contact belts.

He was preparing to face mixed martial artist Steve Tetley for the British middleweight championship at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall.

However, as Primrose made his way through the capacity 1,800 crowd to the ring, the bout was announced as a world title match.

He recovered from a poor opening to record a unanimous verdict over the hometown fighter and claim the world crown

He said: "I was very relaxed before the match but it was announced as a world title match while I was on my way to the ring.

"The occasion got to me in the first round, it’s amazing what one word can do to you. Then my emotions took over and it was a wonderful experience.

"It was a tough fight, I’d never faced Steve before but he’s a very strong man and there was a lot of respect there.

"I’m very happy, I’ve not come down yet and I’m grateful for the support I received on the night."
