Aspull 14

WILMSLOW'S five-try rout of mid-table Aspull has set up a cliffhanger against Anselmians on the final day of the season.

The Wolves must win on Merseyside on April 22 to clinch a play-off place for promotion to North Two West.

Victory is likely to see them play Whitehaven side St Benedicts from the North Lancs/Cumbria league at Pownall Park.

Two tries each for scrum-half Dan Hargreaves and centre Steve Braddock, a fifth from flanker Charlie Levings and nine points from the boot of fly-half Bob MacCallum killed off Aspull last Saturday.

In a free-flowing game, the Wolves racked up 22 points by half-time. And an interception and 60-metre run for the line by Braddock 10 minutes into the second-half knocked the stuffing out of the visitors, and the win was secure.

"It as a workman-like performance," said coach Steve Peters. "We created plenty of scoring opportunities and maybe didn't take all of them in the first half with the wind at our backs. But we managed to contain Aspull in the second half and wrap the game up."

With no game this weekend, Wilmslow will have time to prepare for their visit to Anselmians, where defeat is not an option. Peters added: "It won't be easy, but if we keep our form we will win."

Third-placed Leigh, only a point behind Wilmslow, beat Sandbach 49-0 last week and face fourth-placed Northwich next week. Broughton Park have all but secured the South Lancs/Cheshire One championship.

Wilmslow's second team secured a 24-18 victory over Vale of Lune thirds thanks to tries by Matt Jay, Dad Cichocki and Rob Milner.

The thirds' 26-10 win over Congleton seconds included tries by Andy Rushton and Chris Bull.
