THE long-running Winter League at Alderley Edge has been won by the captain, Richard Greenhill, and the professional Peter Bowring.

The winter league has been running since the 1960s and it is a long-standing custom that the captain and pro always play together. And in the 40-plus years of the league this is the first time anyone can remember the captain/pro combo winning it.

The format is a four-ball betterball match-play format, and 14 teams took part. The winning team was augmented by Alan Conduit who stood in for a couple of games, and also Bill Willmott.

Richard was also in form as Alderley Edge Golf Club's new captains drove-in in the traditional style to launch their year in office.

Lady captain Sue Slater hit her drive 101 yards, while Greenhill shifted his drive 165 yards.

THERE were special celebrations as Styal members enjoyed their annual 'Away Day'.

But for whatever reason the 'Away' Day actually took place at Styal and Eddie Austin took full advantage of local knowledge by holing his seven-iron tee shot on the 150-yard seventh hole for a memorable ace.

Tony Cox was the main man as Styal Seniors played a singles Stableford, winning with 41 points ahead of Bob Taylor (39) and Barry Davies (38).

Styal's junior girls Zoe and Jade Evans teamed-up with Sophia Mannia to win a Sranble for Styal's ladies, posting 69.2. It gave them daylight from Nancy Chorlton, Hedi Keighley and Angeline Ho (74.2) and Sue Buller, Jenny Merren and Enid Bloxham (78.3).

A Sunday Stableford at Styal had promising junior Tom Godfrey showing the way home on 41 points, one clear of Terence Donnellan and Corey Woodward

  • THE St Andrews Society of Manchester is looking for those who by birth, parentage, education, marriage, property or residence were connected with Scotland and who are resident in the Manchester and North Cheshire area to join in their golfing activities.

In 2005 the society are holding golf meetings at Knutsford for the St Andrews Golf Challenge, and for the fabulous Sir Lewis McIver Golf Trophy at Hale in September.

The Society also holds an annual St Andrews Dinner, which this year will be on Thursday, November 27 at the Victoria and Albert Hotel and promises to be a truly Scottish affair. The Society hopes that a celebrity guest speaker from the sporting world will be part of the evening's entertainment.
