Macclesfield fighters endured a tough evening in Leigh, but came home with two wins and two defeats.

Macc Boys’ Boxing Club’s members were part of a North Of England Select Squad taking on Leigh ABC’s show at the Lowton Civic Hall.

First out for MBBC was Abraham Varey against Michael Connor of Leigh in a schoolboys bout. Connor’s strong opening pushed Varey back and he forced the pace by attacking on the counter.

Over the three rounds he did enough to take a unanimous decision.

Headlining the show was a North West Region Championship Belts contest. Castle Hill ABC’s Chris Blinkhorn took on Macc’s Liam Hanrahan in an exceptional bout with two boxers showing very different abilities and styles.

Blinkhorn’s fast hands, movement and work rate weren’t in any way superior to Hanrahan’s pressure building, inward fighting skills and accuracy.

In fact 90 per cent of Blinkhorn’s shots were taken on the gloves, while 90 per cent of Hanrahan’s body and head shots found the target, although it was Blinkhorn that got the decision, despite most of the capacity crowd making Hanrahan the clear winner.

A rematch for the belt will have to happen in the near future.

Josh Spence faced Tomi Tathan in a senior bout and, although Spence hadn’t boxed for two seasons, he took the fight to Tatham. Unfortunately Spence was caught with a powerful body shot which took the wind out of him, rendering him unable to make the count.

Leigh’s Robert Bordon showed his guts when taking on Macc’s Peter Bebbington.

The bout had the locals on their feet and Bordon showed good heart but was outworked and outboxed by the classy Bebbington.

Since Bebbington’s trip to Canada last season he’s come on in leaps and bounds and looks sharper with every bout.

Bordon give Bebbington a good work out but it was clear a unanimous verdict was in the Macc boxer’s favour.
