Prestbury Golf Club’s young star Natalie Lowe at last achieved her long ambition of becoming the Cheshire Ladies champion after an epic competition at Ringway.

Natalie has been the runner-up in two of the past three years but at last she managed to get rid of the bridesmaid’s tag after a thrilling contest with former champion Olivia Briggs.

Lowe, aged 20 and plus one handicap, paid tribute to all at Styal Golf Club where she does much of her training. She set her stall out winning the Millenium Cup and Intermediate Championship Trophy with the best score over the 36-hole qualifier on the opening day.

Going through the first two rounds of the match-play set her up with a semi-final against Emma Goddard of Royal Liverpool and this went to the 20th hole before she made it through to her third final.

There she met Delamere Forest’s Briggs, who was champion in 2000.

There was little to choose between the finalists in the battle for the Championship Bowl although Lowe always had a slight edge being one up going into the 17th hole.

After excellent drives and approach shots both players had birdie putt opportunities.

Briggs’ effort lipped the hole leaving Lowe a tricky 10-footer for the title and she kept her cool to hole it and win the coveted title, prompting celebrations from her father who caddied, and several supporters.

Now she will lead out the Cheshire team in the Northern Counties Championship in June at St Annes Old Links.

Natalie was a junior at Macclesfield Golf Club and their current crop played for the Peter Walker Shield and five-handicapper Declan Rudd posted a superb 44 points to win from Max Pemberton (43) and Connor Hibell (42).

Macc’s ladies played for the Doris Neale Challenge and Sheila Greenwood was out on her own with 44 points.

A Wednesday Stableford at Styal saw Ateeb Khan lead in with 45 points from Alistair Waddell (40).

Styal ladies played a nine-hole Stableford and Frances Purdy led in with 20 points, three more than Joan Chapman.

Shrigley Hall’s latest Thursday Stableford saw a close finish with Mark Kleynhans winning a card play-off on 39 from Peter Will.

Dominic Franey will represent Prestbury in the PGA National pro am after winning his club qualifier with a nett 64.
