STYAL'S England Elite star David Horsey has won a place in the squad from which the 2007 Walker Cup team will be selected.

Horsey, who plays off plus-five, is the Cheshire champion and also a member of the 12-strong England Elite group.

He now has the chance to make the coveted Walker Cup team after being chosen for the 21-strong group for special training with the final Great Britain and Ireland team of ten players and two reserves being selected some six weeks before the match with the USA in Ireland next summer.

Glynn Traynor, Styal's Director of Golf, said: "This is a great honour and opportunity for David, who has been at Styal since joining as a junior some nine years ago.

"He has worked tremendously hard on all aspects of his game and fitness to get where he has and he is the first to realise that making the final team is up to how well he performs in a range of national and international tournaments in the first six months of 2007.

"The club are thrilled by his selection, which is one of the highest achievements in the amateur game, and if makes the team I am sure that they will be over in Ireland in force to give him support."

Back at Styal, their ladies played a Texas Scramble and teaming up with the Lady Captain for a winning 72.5 were Enid Laverty and Jenny Merren.

Next in on 72.9 were Pam Cummings, Gill Jones and Eireene Cundiff on 72.9 with the prize list completed by Enid Bloxham, Sue Buller and Pat Chadwick 74.4.

It was tight for Styal Seniors in a singles Stableford with four players locked on 36 points.

The countback went in favour of Tony Cox from Eddie Austin, Cliff Harrison and Ernie Knight.

Styal's men were also in singles Stableford mode and leading in with 41 points was A Grundy from Tom Godfrey 40 and William Wilks and Alan Fitzpatrick, both 39.

A full field of amateurs and professionals enjoyed their visit to Houldsworth Golf Club for the Greensome Stableford sponsored by Neil Self of Northern Golf.

The outstanding score of the day came in the am-am section from Amateur Order of Merit high-flier Darren Whittaker of Shrigley Hall and his Houldsworth partner Rick Richardson.

They posted a huge 44 points to cruise to victory from Darryl Rowland and Peter Chesworth of Leigh (38) and Shrigley Hall duo Brian Hopkins and Phil Smethurst (37).

Ellesmere assistant pro Martyn Hamer found an ideal partner in club colleague Peter Nugent as they took top spot in the pro-am section with 40 points.

Lymm's Anthony Millar and Stephen Hamilton won a cpo on 39 points to take the runners-up slot from Denton pro Mike Hollingworth and his club Captain Tim Poole.

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
