RECORD temperatures, a record number of entrants and a record time were on the cards at this year’s Wilmslow Triathlon.

Beautiful weather greeted the 200 competitors at the event, sponsored by Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative.

The participants completed a 400-metre swim, 15-mile bike ride through Ashley and Mobberley, and a four-mile run around east Wilmslow.

The ‘Elite’ group were last to set off in the pool, which culminated in a closely fought battle between Paul Skipper and 2007 winner Paul Hawkins, both of Team TriCentral, and eventually resulted in a win for Skipper in just 1hr 2mins 13secs - a new course record. Charlotte Linfoot of Tri Team Wigan was the first female in a time of 1.17.34.

Over half of of the field were novices to the sport, meaning the Wilmslow Triathlon spawned more than 100 new triathletes.

The excitement of the event was enhanced by the many spectators who came to watch, and by the various contributions of sponsors Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Sweatshop, TriCentral, Redbull, For Goodness Shakes, Onken, and SportMed.

On such a hot day many competitors were greatly pleased by the site of local resident Shiona Griffiths, of Hazelwood Road, who provided a water station for the runners outside her home, but also a hosing down, which was greatly appreciated by many of them.
