Former Shrigley Hall Golf Club captains Alan Pengelly and Jim Smethurst were delighted to present a cheque for £1,150 to Jane Sneddon of the East Cheshire Hospice following their final date in the Derek Horsey Memorial charity competition

Jim explained: "The charity competition is for senior golfers in Greater Manchester. Each club in the area had played a qualifying competition earlier in the season for entry into the Manchester and District Seniors competition which played for the Derek Horsey Trophy.

"Derek, the grandfather of top European Tour pro David from Styal Golf Club, had founded the league, and the KO competition was played over the summer with entry fees totalling £2,300.

"Alan and I reached the final at Didsbury against Whitefield’s representatives and they won with a birdie on the 18th.

"Before the match we had decide that we would split the money 50/50 for our respective chosen charities and our choice was the East Cheshire Hospice."

Styal’s seniors were in the second round of their Winter League and Martin Ogden had a day to remember with a winning 42 points seeing him well clear of John Wilkinson 38 and Malcolm Hollins and Ged Harrison, both 37.

It needed a card play-off on 35 points to see Brian Conway to top spot in a Wednesday Stableford at Styal, ahead of Alistair Waddell.

The Manchester Alliance’s ‘Dave Smith Show’ took another twist in the annual battle for the Hancock Trophy at Sale for Mixed Foursomes.

Smith, the assistant professional at Swinton Park, has dominated the early competitions and he found an ideal partner in his delighted lady captain Carolyn Bentley as they posted 37 points to win the pro-am section, as well as the Hancock Trophy for the first time since 1974.

Next in on 36 points were Davenport’s Graham Cox and Linda Lomax with Chorley duo Alliance life member Denis Durnian and his wife Sam who won a cpo on 34 points from Knutsford’s Tim and Susie Maxwell.

In the am-am section Denis’s son Charles showed his talent as he partnered his Styal colleague Sophie Shearer to a winning 33 points from Dave Roberts and Chris Furzer (Lymm) (31).
