THE Centenary Year at Alderley Edge is now in full swing and the long-standing 'major' for the 36 Hospital Trophy produced its youngest-ever winner.

Thirteen-year old Max Penney played off an 18-handicap and had great rounds of 68 and 67 for a winning 135 total.

Max's dad Paul is the Edge junior organiser and he also won the trophy back in 1991.

The Captain's charity, the Katie Trust, also received a donation from the competition.

Wilmslow's men were in medal action and AJ Sibley had a great round of 66 to win Division One from GR Maddock (69), C Miller and J Harari, (both 71).

I P Triggs found that 72 was enough to top Division Two from Simon Langdon (73) and J Kenna (74).

Styal's men played a three-day festival of singles stablefords and Ernie Knight led on day one with 34 points from G Hammond and John Higson, who both scored 33.

It was tight on day two with Rob Sanderson winning a cpo on 37 points from Colin Richards, with Richard Tomlinson third on 36.

The final day produced real drama with five players in a logjam on 35 points at the top of the leader board.

After a careful count-back Ken Mayoh got the nod from Bryan Wheatley, J Kelly, Ray Morris and Bryan Ford.

Local golfers have a great chance to see some top class golfers in action at the Marriott Worsley Park from May 31 to June 3.

They are again staging a European Challenge Tour event, sponsored by Oceanic Developments and MEN media.

The Challenge Tour is the stepping-stone to the full European Tour.

The 156-strong field will include some of the country's top young professionals on show.

A special feature of the event is that on the final two days amateurs play alongside the pros in a team format.

Admission is free and spectators are welcome.
