Cranage Hall hosted the third annual Cheshire East Sports Awards, with Wilmslow High School and Alderley Edge Hockey Club recognised for their work in the local sporting community.

The awards, hosted by British basketball and Radio Manchester presenter Mike Shaft, were presented by Cheshire East’s mayor , Councillor George Walton.

The nominees shortlisted, were being recognised for the effort and dedication they had shown.

Wilmslow High School Year 13 student Jessica Finney was shortlisted for the ‘Young Volunteer’ award for her outstanding input to the Macclesfield School Sports Partnership Programme, assisting with the running and organising of sports events for primary and secondary school students.

The Holly Road North school’s assistant head teacher, Mark Vincent, was shortlisted for the Special Recognition award, for his contribution towards the huge success the school has achieved in PE and sport at a national level.

He said: "It’s a great honour to be here representing the many dedicated professionals who have made Wilmslow High School such a beacon for sporting excellence and participation.

"It has been very much a team effort and I’ve been fortunate to be part of such a committed team."

The newly introduced Sports Personality award was won by former student Matthew Nottingham for achievements as part of the Great Britain badminton squad.

High School staff members Rosie Harris, Anna Marie Cragg and Kerry Axon were also present after their volunteer work as ‘Games Makers’ in this year’s Olympic Games.

Local hockey coach and Alderley Edge member Kelvin Briggs (pictured above, with Coun Walton) also enjoyed a successful evening.

He picked up the award for Volunteer of the Year as well as accepting the Club of the Year prize – their second in two years – on their behalf.

Coun Walton said: "The year 2012 will go down in history as a great sporting year.

"These awards recognise those at the grassroots level who have a passion for sport and represent Cheshire East.

"Many of the award winners have dedicated a lot of time to excelling in their chosen sport or guiding others towards their dreams."
