PRESTBURY’S Cheshire star Mike Bedford is in a rich vein of form that began with him winning the Cheshire Championship over his own course, and setting a new course record.

He followed this by winning the Bromborough Bowl, a Northern Order of Merit competition over 36 holes.

Bedford posted rounds of 69 and 71 for a 140 total that saw him home by a shot from Ollie Smith (Ashton-on-Mersey).

Then he showed his liking for his own course as he won the Prestbury Open, another Northern Order of Merit event.

Neat rounds of 69/68-141 saw him four shots clear of the field with club colleague Daniel Osbaldeston in third place with a 142 total.

Bedford is now in the top three in the Order of Merit and he has a huge lead in the Cheshire competition.

Bedford’s Cheshire team mate, James Murphy of Shrigley Hall, also made his mark in the English Men’s Mid Amateur Championship at Silloth.

Home player John Longcake won but Murphy’s quality saw him take the runners-up berth with consistent rounds of 73, 71 and 72 for a 216 total.

Styal’s men played a Wednesday medal and first past the post was Rob Sanderson with his 66 seeing him home by a shot from M Entwistle.

Eddie Austin won a seniors medal at Styal with a neat 70 giving him a one-shot edge from Terry Hanna and Wally Tibbitts.

A seniors stableford at Styal needed a card play-off on 40 points to see John Blackburn home from Sandy Birks.

Another seniors stableford saw David Murray win with 41 points, with Paul Mooney and Martin Belshaw a point off the pace.

Styal ladies played an EWGA medal with Joan Chapman winning a cpo on 71 from Pat Chadwick.

A singles stableford at Shrigley Hall saw Janet Gates well clear on 37 from Peter Duffy (32) and Mike Gates (29).

Davenport’s men played over 36 holes during president Mike Jones’ Weekend.

Top score came from Fraser McLachlan (143-10-133) to win by three shots from Nigel Cann.

Mark Richardson had the best gross of 143 and round winners were Ray Brown (65) and Geoff Hall (66).

More celebrations with aces, both on the 10th hole, came from Andy Yarwood and Graham Lake.

Davenport ladies enjoyed Captain’s Day with Sylvia Taylor leading in from Zilpha Thomas and L Bryceland.

Jerry Dixon was the star at Alderley Edge, posting a superb nett 62 to win Division One in the monthly medal. Bill Bennett took Division Two with a more sedate 66.
