Wilmslow’s Chris and Oliver Petch were out in action at Oulton Park at the weekend.

It was the father-and-son duo’s first outing since blowing the engine of the 2.6litre Triumph TR5 last summer at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.

They picked up the car – from a complete engine rebuild – only days before they were due on Oulton’s International circuit in the Classic and Sports Car Club’s Swinging Sixties Series.

"We’re just here for a bit of fun," admitted Chris. "But we’ll see what happens when we get out there."

Race one saw a dramatic opening few laps as Chris climbed to third overall

following a late braking manoeuvre into Old Hall corner early in lap two. The suspension failure of then leader Paul Turnbull at Hislop’s chicane allowed Petch to take second place.

A hounding from Gideon Hudson in the Lotus Seven ensued, the two of them overtaking the Lotus Elan of Stephen Bond to put Petch back into second spot.

A steady push over the next few laps saw Chris pull away gently to finish just under a second ahead of third-placed Lotus Seven of Gideon Hudson, with a fastest lap of 2min 0.278sec.
