It was yet another tough weekend for Speedworks Motorsport in the final rounds of the 2012 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch.

The weekend started brightly with BTCC rookie Adam Morgan qualifying his Toyota Avensis in sixth place just 0.585secs off the pole time of Tom Onslow-Cole in the eBay Motors BMW.

Team-mate – and Mobberley resident – Tony Hughes also looked promising knocking chunks out of his free practice performances, finally posting a time of 1:36.156.

It was not long before the anticipated wet weather arrived – and it was set in for the day. Morgan took 12th spot in race one, fighting his way from near the back of the field following a first-lap mishap.

Hughes continued his dependable finishing record, taking 20th spot overall.

The weekend – and thus the season – was to end in disappointing fashion for Morgan.

In race two the former Ginetta GT Supercup champion ended up in a collision with Andy Neate’s out-of-control MG.

He was punted into the barriers at speed and out of the meeting with another round still to go – and was lucky to escape serious injury. Hughes improved by coming home in 17th, just 0.365secs behind the Vauxhall Vectra of Chris James.

Race three saw Hughes as the lone Speedworks runner folloing Morgan’s departure from race two. He didn’t disappoint, bringing home his Avensis in 15th overall, taking the final overall championship point on offer.

It was a nice swansong for Hughes, who has decided to hang up his race boots following his second year in Britain’s top saloon car category.

He said: "It’s been a shame that we never reached that elusive top 10, though I’m very pleased with how my pace has improved over my time in the BTCC, particularly in wet conditions."

The Speedworks Motorsport team finished the 2012 Independents team championship in sixth place with Morgan 15th and Hughes 18th in the drivers’ championship – the latter finishing all 24 races in which he started.
