IT'S all or nothing at Anselmians on Saturday as Wilmslow RUFC hope to secure a play-off spot in the final match of the season.

It's been a long, hard slog for a brave team with limited resources and if it comes down to pride and passion, the Wolves will deliver.

The second-placed Pownall Park outfit is desperate to return to Powergen North Two West, where they will play the likes of Lymm, Vale of Lune, Rochdale and Liverpool St Helens.

In a rollercoaster season they have topped South Lancs/Cheshire One, reached the fourth round of the Intermediate Cup, the Cheshire Vase semi-final, beaten league champions Broughton Park and suffered frustrating defeats when victory seemed the easier option.

Now it has all come down to the last game of the season at Anselmians, who Wilmslow beat narrowly 11-9 in December and lost to 22-19 in extra time in the Cheshire Vase semi-final in February. They now stand fifth in the table.

Skipper Chris Jones is up for the challenge, and determined that if his side should make the play-offs and gain promotion, Wilmslow will stay in N2W this time.

He remembers only too well the promotion season of 2000/01, which was followed by defeat after defeat and relegation straight back to South Lancs/Cheshire One.

"We are better equipped to deal with promotion this time round, but I'm not thinking that far ahead yet," said Jones.

"We have Anselmians to beat on Saturday, and then the play-off itself. We'll take this one match at a time as we have done all season."

The Wolves will be selecting from strength, with all senior players available after a week's lay-off.

Anselmians clinched the Cheshire Vase 25-3 against Wirral and will be ready to spoil Wilmslow's end of term party. The Wolves are expecting no favours on the Wirral.

Jones added: "We know what they are going to be like. We have had two hard games against them and we need to go there focused on the job to get the result we need.

"We have had a good season to finish second so far - it will be better when we've made the play-offs and better still if we gain promotion."

With Leigh only a point behind playing fourth-placed Northwich, nothing short of victory on Saturday will do for Wilmslow.

Only the thirds played last weekend, and they beat a strong Buxton side 15-14.
