MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club has cause for a triple celebration after Sam Bradbury, Amin Mamoon and Josh Spence claimed regional senior novice titles.

The Macc club’s Ollie Collins and John Watson were beaten in the ABA Senior Novice preliminary rounds in Bolton, and Joe Collins was edged out by a single point in his second bout.

However, Bradbury led the way for MBBC in the 91kg class, beating Ryan Walden from the Steve Egan Boxing Academy in the semi-finals and Paul Morris (Larches and Savick ABC) in a grudge match for the title.

Bradbury had beaten Morris in a bout last season and was happy to let his opponent attack while he scored points from counter-attacks.

Evenly-poised going into the final round, Bradbury stepped up to take the North West regional title with a 12-5 points win.

Then Spence faced former professional Ryan Crooks, who had returned to the amateur ranks, in the 75kg final.

The opponent from Old Trafford was a strong competitor and the bout was even at the end of the first round.

Spence took the second round by one point and stepped up a gear in the final two minutes. He allowed Crooks to come forward before landing some excellent counter-punches.

A close decision went Spence’s way and he was awarded the North West championship.

Mamoon’s victory in Bolton meant that the Macc club had three regional winners, and they would go on to the next round, to face Merseyside regional winners.

Coach Jez Hough said: "It was a massive achievement having three champions, all of whom are boxing well and getting their just reward for their hard work in recent weeks."
