Macc star Donaldson goes back to his roots

EUROPEAN Tour star Jamie Donaldson returned from a successful tournament in Portugal to give a boost to the juniors at Macclesfield Golf Club.

Jamie, the finest-ever product of the club’s thriving junior section, along with club pro Tony Taylor were able to answer queries and gives ‘Tips from the Top’ to the juniors as they prepare for a busy season ahead.

Conditions were tough with high winds to contend with over a challenging course at De Vere Wychwood Park for the Manchester Alliance’s second visit of the winter season.

But there was a close finish in the pro-am section with three pairs locked on 38 points with the pro’s sharing the money.

The card play-off went in favour of Swinton Park’s David Smith and Lee Parr, ahead of Davenport assistant pro Graham Cox and Wychwood member Mel Thompson and Davenport pro Tony Stevens and Mark Richardson.

In the am-am section Shrigley Hall were to the fore with Carl Kennedy keeping up his rich vein of from as he partnered Steve Rhodes to a winning 41 points.

Next in on 38 were Kevin Hawkins (Withington) and John Russell (Sale) who won a count-back from homesters R Ashton and P Hodgson.

Medal play at Wilmslow saw K Pickersgill top Division One with 68 from M Robins (70), RC Martin and G Baker (both 72). Division Two was led in by GM Jones (71), two clear of TB Roberts and W Cartwright.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal had a clear winner in Chris Hodgetts on 37 from Mike Core (31) and Ken Mayoh (30).

The final Winter Open at Mottram Hall had clear winners on 92 points from Vipain Jain, Ajay Jain, Sian Mian and Shok Mirza and four points off their pace were S Bond, I Thompson, G Jolley and M Roberts.

Medal play for Mottram members saw John Doyle in top spot on 78 a shot clear of the chasing pack of Fred Rose, Shock Mirza and Stuart Codling.

Davenport’s men played a BB Stableford and winning with a superb 45 points off their low handicaps were Mark Richardson and Chris Banfield.

Next in were financial wizards Bob McGowan and Dave Powell on 44 points after a cpo with Mike Clewley and Joe Buckley.
