MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club’s Kirk Crawthorne took a well-deserved win at an England v Wales Select meeting at Shotton ABC.

The Macc club had two fighters in action at the Civic Hall, Connah’s Quay.

While Crawthorne took on Sparton Palace’s Guto Ifan, Peter Bebbington topped the bill with a match against the highly experienced Thomas Doran.

Crawthorne rose to the task, using a good variety of shots.

The tough, classy Ifan couldn’t avoid the accurate shots and pressure of Crawthorne’s attacks, and required help from the referee, who wiped blood from his nose several times from the second round onwards.

Crawthorne dominated the fight to take a unanimous victory, his first of the season.

Meanwhile, Bebbington had a daunting task in facing the home fighter, who had a capacity Shotton crowd behind him.

In a superbly contested bout, both boxers used their skills to good advantage throughout.

In what was his 69th amateur fight, Doran was marginally sharper and used body shots to his advantage.

He also resorted to spoiling tactics and Bebbington gave a detemined performance and refused to let Doran have it all his own way.

The Shotton fighter was awarded the decision in what was to be his last amatuer bout before turning professional.
