At the recent Cheshire county championships held at Wilmslow Leisure Centre, Wilmslow Judo Club members took on players from all over Cheshire.

With nearly 150 entrants the day turned out to be one of the most successful for a long time, with Wilmslow players taking seven gold medals, four silver, four bronze, two fourth places and one fifth place.

The club finished top of the medal table, winning the Cheshire Cup in the process.

Some of the most exiting judo came from the Wilmslow players, particularly Robert Evans, who displayed superb skill with powerful groundwork techniques, and James Brocklehurst, who thrilled the crowd with the two best throws of the day. The 15-year-olds have both developed their judo skills over the the last 18 months training with the senior members.

Club coach Paul Burgess said: "Having watched the World Cup and seen so-called professional athletes writhing around in agony having taken the slightest knock, it is refreshing to watch judo players as young as eight being thrown at speed onto their backs, brush themselves down and get stuck right back into the fight.

"Judo teaches the kids discipline, respect for their opponent win or lose."
