STOCKPORT Golf Club’s Cheshire star David Peel birdied two of the last three holes to win the Prestbury Open and pick up his first Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit points of the season.

The Stockport player trailed six shots off the pace at the end of the first round after handing in a four-over-par 75.

But he stormed back with a 69 to claim the spoils on a better second round score than his Cheshire clubmate James Murphy who matched his aggregate.

The Shrigley Hall veteran returned 71 and 73 on a testing day when there were only three shots’ difference between the first and 12th man, with Hazel Grove’s Mark Rogers finishing eighth with his 145 return.

The win also lifts David Peel into the top 12 of the Northern Order of Merit.
