ENGLAND enjoyed some World Cup success this summer, taking the junior prize in the ninth Wilmslow Mini-World Cup.

A dozen teams from local primary schools competed in the tournament, organised by Wilmslow Sports JFC at Upcast Lane, with each team adopting a country from the competition in Germany.

The event saw more than 240 players take part and represent their nation for the day.

A total of 42 matches were played in the group stage, semi-finals and finals.

In the finals, Alderley Edge, representing England, triumphed by the only goal over a St Benedict side playing under the guise of Italy to lift the juniors' trophy.

In the senior division, the Mexicans from Lindow overcame the lively Ivory Coast team from Pownall Hall 2-1 and won the senior title.

Presenting the trophies was Tony Whelan, Assistant Director of Manchester United's Football Academy.

He said: "It's great to see the high standard of football skills on display here and I was pleased that school football in and around Wilmslow is thriving."
