STYAL amateur Peter Clack and Mottram Hall's Tim Maxwell finished top of the Manchester Alliance Greensome Stableford at Leigh Golf Club.

Maxwell, who recently won the Fairhaven Winter Pro-am, and Clack each posted 40 points in the competition sponsored by Mark Jonson of Shrigley Hall.

Runners-up on 39 points were Didsbury father and son duo Danny and Mike Wardrop with 39 points.

Alliance debutants Colin Owens and Mike Dermody from High Legh Park won the am-am section after winning a cpo on 38 points from Styal duo Sam Jafaari and James Bennett.

Maxwell then capitalised on his local knowledge when he shared the top prize in the inaugural Hatfields Hyundai Winter Pro-am Series at Mottram Hall, where he is a professional.

But he needed four birdies in five holes near the end of his round of one-under-par 71 to draw level with Freddie Valenti, from Pryors Hayes.

A shot off the pace was Mossock Hall's David Shacklady, who won a three-day event in Spain 10 days earlier. And on 73 was Nick Sargent, from Eastham Lodge, who beat Maxwell in the Cheshire and North Wales PGA Matchplay Championship last week.

Sargent also won the team prize at Mottram on 15-under-par with clubmates Jack Wilkes, Wendy Jackson and Margaret Barker.

The next event in the series is on February 12.

Wednesday play at Styal saw Rob Sanderson comfortably home on 39 points from Steve James (36) and Tim Cowsill (35).

Davenport's men played a two from three Stableford multiplier and the winners were Ian Davenport, Paul Robinson and John Maw with 86 points from the 78 of Dave Williams, Ken Carr and Brian Healey.

Golfers seeking winter team competition golf are being invited to enter the Hatfields Hyundai Winter Open Series.

The events are being staged at De Vere Mottram Hall each month until March.

Apart from the Open Turkey Trot for BB Pairs on Monday, December 18 each event costs £80 for a team of four in the am-am format.

The other dates are January 15, February 19 and March 19.

The Turkey Trot is a shotgun start at 10am while all others have tee times from 9am to 11am.
