ALDERLEY Edge Golf Club’s 11-handicapper Ken Hall has been playing golf for six years at the club and prior to that for a number of years at AVRO Golf Club with a best handicap of nine.

But like hundreds and thousands of other amateur golfers, he had never achieved the coveted hole-in-one.

But then, like buses, they turned up twice within seven days.

Ken’s first ace was at Rhuddlan Golf Club when he was enjoying a break with a group from his home club.

His seven-iron tee shot on the 155-yard 17th par three flew unerringly into the cup without touching the green and was witnessed with great joy by the Edge players who had just left the green.

"Amazingly," said Ken, "One of our own group of four did not see it as he was looking for his own ball and was not aware of the ace until the end of the round.

"The ace didn’t help our team to win and was about my only decent contribution to the score."

And just a few days later, playing in the Saturday Stableford at Alderley Edge lightning struck again for Ken.

He was playing the 125-yard sixth and his tee shot bounced once before going into the hole to set up more clubhouse celebrations.

Ken added: "I now have a weird feeling on the tee of every par three that I am playing that I will get another ace - but I am sure that will soon wear off."

Shrigley Hall players were also celebrating after winning the Manchester Alliance club team of the year for a third successive time.

Consistent displays throughout the Alliance winter season had racked up enough points to stay well clear of the pack.

Back at Shrigley they played a singles Stableford with Don Farquarson out on his own with 40 points, four clear of Peter Duffy.

A second singles Stableford saw Lynda Rolland lead in with 37 points from Mark Kleynhaus and Richard Park (both 36).

The Spring Cup at Macclesfield saw the top score in Division One come from Paul Bowden (66) ahead of Stephen Pritchard (68).

In Division Two Alan D’Arcy cruised home with 67 from Phil Small (69) and K Rogers (70).

Macc ladies played for the Hollins Rose Bowl and the proud winner was Susan Walton with 39 points from G Hickson (36) and Lindsay Monk (35).

Davenport’s men played for the Reginald Smith Trophy and topping Division One with 68 was Mike Rigg from Arnie Anderson.

Max Aitken led in Division Two with 68, finishing two shots clear of Neil Cartwright.

Completing the winners was Neil Healey with a 67 to take Division Three from Tony Sieben and also claim the Reginald Smith Trophy.
