Last Saturday Edge faced Macclesfield with both sides after six games of the Cheshire Premier League – a stage when the table is a good guide of the relative merits of all the teams.

Macclesfield won the toss and, perhaps surprisingly, chose to bat first on an overcast day that marked the end of the recent good weather.

Macclesfield’s star player, Cheshire batsmen Khalid Sawas, has been in outstanding form recently and so it proved here with another century.

He received a helping hand though as Alderley’s fielding was well below par, missing a hatful of catches.

Sawas didn’t need a second invitation as he racked up another century in a Macclesfield total of 220-9 at tea.

Jason Whittaker toiled away for 28 overs for Edge, returning excellent figures of 5-99, but a couple of run outs didn’t help the visitors cause.

Edge openers, skipper Alan Day and ex-Lancashire player Mark Currie, set about building their best opening partnership of the season with Currie, in particular, showing glimpses of his best form as they clocked up a 150-run partnership.

Currie scored a sparkling century with Day a gritty 47 before the home team suffered a mini-collapse.

However, Charlie Reid and Whittaker put on an unbroken 50 partnership and secure a vital win for Edge with nearly 10 overs in hand – earning them 25 points and Macclesfield 10.

The result puts Edge up to the heady heights of fourth in table with the title race looking like it is developing into a duel between Oxton and Hyde with Alderley in the shake up for third place.

The following day Edge fell foul of the terrible weather on Jubilee Sunday as they lost in a bowl out with Chester Boughton Hall in the third round of the National Knockout after no play was possible.

Next Saturday Edge are at Widnes in the league before a home game with New Brighton in the Cheshire Cup on Sunday.
