WILMSLOW Lacrosse club have plenty to celebrate after playing a important role in England's gold medal triumph at the European Championships in Prague this summer.

The Styal Road club had three first team players which starred for the national team in the Czech Republic - but it was vital help in the build-up to the championships which really benefited England.

Wilmslow allowed England to train on their pitches and also looked after the players as they prepared to meet some of the world's best teams .

And as a mark of thanks the England team have given Wilmslow the European Championship trophy they won. The trophy is to be housed in their clubhouse for an indefinite period to celebrate the country's history-making success overseas. It will then make it's way around all the other North of England clubs who had players that figured in the winning team.

"The squad have been fantastic to work with," said Wilmslow LC spokeswoman Jan Perrin. "It was great to have three players from the club involved in the championships. It makes us very proud.

"We fully support England in what they are trying to do. It's really nice they have decided to loan the club the trophy. We are very honoured."

Daniel Green and the Mountney brothers, John and Chris, all starred for their country in Prague this summer. Chris was a shining light and England's top goalscorer at the championships.

He was voted in the European Championships All-Star team.
