POWNALL Hall School's former European Judo champion Ryan Birch is spearheading a revival of the modern martial art at the Wilmslow school.

The softly-spoken gentle giant, who represented Great Britain at two Olympics as well as winning the European title, said: "There has seen a slight decline in youngsters wanting to participate.

"I run classes in eight local schools and have not seen a decline, but the British Judo Association is reporting a reduction in newcomers to the sport."

Ryan, like his supporters at Pownall in on Carrs Road, Wilmslow, where he runs a popular after school club on Tuesday evenings, believes judo is pre-requisite of good education.

Ryan said: "As well as being an immensely energetic exercise which is good for all round strength, balance and agility - judo teaches discipline, self control and mutual respect."

He added: "In this modern age when so many children's activities centre around information communication technology and the sofa, there is much to be said for allowing children to have a controlled wrestle."

Ryan's views were echoed by Pownall Hall's Acting Headmaster, Nigel Burrows, also a physical education specialist, who said: "Judo teaches young boys and young girls discipline and self-control and is a fantastic sport for the developing body and mind."

Mr Burrows added: "At Pownall we have been very lucky to work with such a prominent and talented figure in the sport, and the children always react with both awe and enthusiasm to Ryan's coaching."
