MARTIAL ARTS: A bid to raise money for Macclesfield charities by holding martial arts seminars has already pulled in more than £1,000.

The Martial Arts Fighting Cancer campaign raised a total of £1,100 from a seminar at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.

Sponsors AstraZeneca donated £500, with the rest brought in by visitors who lined up to be taught by leading instructors.

Four times British freestyle karate champion Jamie Goulding was among those giving their time to raise money for charity.

And Escrima and Jeet Kune Do expert Dave Green also demonstrated his know-how - as the picture on the right shows.

Organisers are hoping for an even bigger turnout when the second seminar takes place on February 8 (11am-4pm).

Among the instructors booked to take part are UK Karate head coach Jean-Jacques Burnel, who is also the bassist with new wave group The Stranglers.

All money raised from both seminars will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust and the MAST Appeal.

The appeal is raising money to equip the new Macmillan Cancer ward at Macclesfield Hospital.
