SOCCER: Teenage striker Brian McIlroy is hoping to make an impression on trial at Macclesfield Town.

The 19-year-old - no relation to former Macc boss Sammy McIlroy - is training with the Silkmen after being released by Liverpool.

Manager David Moss said: "Gil Prescott spotted Brian last season at the exit trials at Lilleshall for young players who have just been released by clubs.

"I'm just getting him in to have a look at him and see what he can do."

Meanwhile, David Eaton is moving closer to a place in Macclesfield's first-team squad after two impressive reserve displays.

The former Everton youngster, signed on a non-contract basis, set up all three goals as Macc reserves won 3-0 at Wrexham last Wednesday.

And manager David Moss said that he nearly put the midfielder in the squad for last Saturday's game against Boston.

Moss said: "David Eaton's played very well in the reserves, and was close to being on the bench last Saturday.

"I would have done had Steve Hitchen not been a problem. In the end I decided it would be better to have George Abbey on the bench as cover for Steve if he had to come off."

Steve Brackenridge, Jordan Goodeve and Steve Owens scored for the Silkmen at Wrexham.

Elsewhere, Neil Robinson will lead a youthful Macclesfield reserve side into their Cheshire Cup replay at Tranmere tonight (Wednesday, October 9).
