MACCLESFIELD succumbed to their first league defeat of the season, 3-1 at Knutsford, which now leaves them two points behind the league leaders.

Knutsford played like it was their cup final.

They started strongly and caused Macc's defence all types of trouble.

However, it was Macc who scored first with Matt Johnson finishing off a well- worked open play goal.

Macc still hadn't switched on though, and they conceded two goals in quick succession from sloppy defending.

At half time, Macc knew they had to pick up their tempo and start playing.

Macc began to create more chances with some that should have been taken.

One chance brought Macc a problem as their captain had to be carried off with a hamstring injury.

As Macc's other teams were struggling for players, the squad only consisted of 11.

Therefore, Macc had to continue for the last 20 minutes with only ten men.

As depleted Macc continued to press, this left gaps at the back and Knutsford took advantage of this with minutes to go by scoring a third and therefore securing the victory.

Macc play hosts to Neston South Wirral on Saturday and hope to get back on track.
