FIGHTERS from Macclesfield Boys Boxing Club made their bids for Senior Novice glory, and Liam Hanrahan  shone on a tough night for the Macc boys.

Boxers from the Macc club made their way to Preston on what turned out to be a mammoth task, problems on the motorway meaning the quartet made the weigh-in with just five minutes to spare.

Hanrahan faced Bridgewater ABC’s stylish fighter Lee Gillespie in the 55kg category, and came under pressure in the opening exchanges.

However, his strength, work rate and movement told as the bout wore on and the Salford fighter’s game fell apart. Hanrahan was awarded the decision and the East Lancs, Cumbria, Isle of Man and Cheshire Senior Novice title.

Having recently returned from a spell away from the ring, Amin Mamoon took on Bolton’s Yasser Arif in a 48kg match.

Avoiding Arif and hitting him with counter-punching, Mamoon was never in trouble but couldn’t get close enough to score effectively, many shots being taken on Arif’s gloves. Despite a good performance from the Macc fighter, Arif took the decision.

Pete Bebbington weathered an early storm in his match against Northside’s Phelps and hit back with some clean shots to the head and body. Both were rocked throughout a hard-fought and entertaining match and Bebbington seemed to have the edge in the latter stages. A tight decision was edged by Phelps, but it could have gone the Macc lad’s way.

In the last bout on the card, 75kg fighter Michael Fitzpatrick faced Sandygate’s slick fighter, Ben Brindle.

The pair traded clean, straight shots and made good use of the ring in another excellent fight.

In another tight bout, the judges awarded the decision to Brindle by just one point.
