RACE ace Kelvyn Whalley will make history when he becomes the first person from Macclesfield to compete in a stock car world final.

The 24-year-old will line up alongside the best drivers in the country in the 2005 BriSCA F2 World Championship Final in Northampton on Sunday.

Whalley, ranked 70th at the start of the year, has been in outstanding form and has broken into the sport's top 20.

And now the Bosley flyer hopes to cap a fantastic season by winning the final, although he knows it won't be easy.

"It's going to be tough but you never know," said the mechanic, who works at AM Bell Garage in Sutton. "I've been racing for seven years now and this is the biggest race of my life.

"I do feel a bit nervous and I'm sure I will on the day, especially compared to some of the other drivers.

"But I can't wait and I'm really looking forward to being the first person from Macclesfield to race in a world final."

Whalley has been watching stock car racing since he was a child and reaching the final still hasn't sunk in yet.

He added: "I used to go up with my dad when I was younger to watch; now I'm in the final - it's unbelievable.

The Macc lad will certainly have his work cut out when he starts on the ninth row on the grid in the showcase event.

But he has already shown he can make an impact from the back of the field after a brilliant drive in the semi-final at Mildenhall on Saturday, August 27.

He added: "I only just qualified for the semi-final, so I started back in 22nd on the 11th row, but I managed to work by way up to ninth and qualify for the final."
