Hole-some fun for youngsters
9/ 5/2008
Budding young golfers are being offered a once in a lifetime chance to play with the pros, thanks to a sporting initiative from the Oceânico Group Pro-Am Challenge. The professional golf tournament gets underway at Marriott Worsley Park on Wednesday 28th May and Junior Clinics will run alongside the event to allow children to pick up some top tips.
Each hour-long clinic will be taught by Challenge Tour professionals, including former European Tour winner and golf analyst Paul Eales, and will help young golfers to improve their swing, hone their ball control and polish their putting in a real tournament environment. Salford City Council is supporting the clinics, which aim to provide first rate sports opportunities for children in the area.
Simon Burgess, Director of Oceânico Group, said: ‘The Junior Clinics offer a fantastic opportunity for young golfers to benefit from some valuable tips from the top. The Oceânico Group Pro-Am Challenge is all about bringing together professional and amateur players and this year we wanted to give children the chance to gain from the golfing talent that will be at the event. We're delighted to be involved in this and look forward to seeing players of all levels in action at Worsley later this month.’
Lindsey Hebden, tourism marketing manager for Salford City Council said: ‘The clinics are a great way to introduce children to golf and we hope that it will inspire them to come to the exciting high profile tournament later in the year.’
Managing Director of tournament promoter ISM, Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, welcomed the initiative: ‘Many of the Challenge Tour professionals are themselves coming through the ranks of professional golf, and it’s great that they are willing to offer their time to give tips and advice to youngsters. The clinics and the event itself will also give young golfers an insight into professional golf, and hopefully inspire them to maybe play in this prestigious tournament themselves one day.’
Clinics take place on Wednesday 28th May from 10.00am-11.00am and Saturday 31st May from 4.00pm-5.00pm on the practice range at Marriott Worsley Park Hotel & Country Club. Children with an official golf handicap are welcome to attend, but places are limited to 30 per clinic, so book your place soon to avoid disappointment by calling ISM on 01565 832100.
There are plenty of opportunities for golf fans without a handicap wishing to get involved in the event too, with daily putting competitions, a golf simulator and prize draws throughout the event. Entry to the tournament is free and there’s ample free parking on site. For more information, call ISM on 01565 832100. The Oceanico Group Pro-Am Challenge, which attracts some 156 Challenge Tour players, takes place at Marriott Worsley Park from 29th May-1st June 2008. It’s a free-to-watch spectacle for locals wanting a great day out at one of the region’s leading golf courses, and gives them the chance to support local amateurs as they tee up alongside talented professionals.
