Tee'd up for great year

19/12/2007

MACCLESFIELD Golf Club 2007 AGM saw the retiring captains announce that a total of £7,000 had been raised by the members for the Captain’s Charities.

The Captain donated his cheque to Macclesfield Junior Brass Band, Macclesfield Junior Football and Macclesfield Junior Boxing Clubs and the Lady Captain donated her cheque to the Young Persons Unit at Christies Hospital.

The Captains for 2008, David Hopewell and Veronica Gough, were elected as was, historically, the first Lady President of the club, Myra Clark.

On the following day the Captain’s Drive-In took place and, although the competition was cancelled due to the inclement weather, both the Captains and the President managed to drive off before watching members.

Davenport’s men played a medal over 12 holes with a big entry of 118 men.

Philip Cross took Division One with a nett 42 after a card play-off with Jim Thornhill.

Steve Travis was top man in Division Two on 40.6 from Laurie Chick (41.3) and Brian Johnson shone in Division Three with 38.6 from David Tate (40).

Denton professional Mike Hollingworth and his young club amateur partner John Chaisty began their round at Wilpshire with two birdies and an eagle to set up the top score so far in the Manchester Alliance Winter Greensomes.

They went on to enjoy some excellent greens and post a fine 46 points which left them two points clear of Northenden assistant pro Danny Midgelow and Carl Kennedy (Shrigley Hall) in the pro-am section.

Third place went to Alliance life member Denis Durnian, back from the European Seniors Tour, who was helped by his amateur partner, Stan Wilson from Heaton Moor.

Shrigley Hall were again prominent in the am-am section as Phil Smethurst and Alan Pengelly eased home with 44 points.

Mellor and Townscliffe regulars Dave Allcock and John Easter were a point off the pace and third spot went to Fairfield’s Jim Cooper and Daniel Heathcote with 40 points.

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until March.
