James is top Brit

3/10/2007

Teenage golfer James Spencer was the highest placed British player in the Under-14 World Championships in San Diego.

A pupil at the King’s School’s Boys’ Division in Macclesfield and a member of Sandbach and Astbury golf clubs, James has a handicap of four and is hoping to get down to scratch in the next two years.

Competing against a field of 150 young golfers from around the world and playing off flat, James made the cut with rounds of 75 and 76 before carding a 73 to finish a highly creditable 28th in the field.

James, aged 14, from Middlewich Road, Sandbach, said: "It was an awesome experience to be teeing off with golfers from Korea, Australia, America and Scandinavia was fantastic.

"Just to look at how they prepared themselves and their attitude was fantastic. I felt I was learning more about my own game all the time."

James, who counts US Solheim Cup star Morgan Pressel as his favourite golfer, works hard at his game, practising for at least two hours every night in an effort to attain his one ambition - to become a professional golfer.

And for the club hacker he has a key tip: "Listen for the putts dropping, don’t look. That ensures you keep your head down and still."
