Silkgirls held by Buxton

MACC Town Ladies battled hard for a 2-2 draw at home to Buxton Ladies.

Matches between these teams are always close and this weekend’s proved no exception. After a fine win in midweek, Macc started confidently and the pace of Sue Bassett, Jen Monaghan and Jodie Burgess kept the visiting defence at full stretch.

The clearest chances fell to Macc, including a good shot from Bassett which hit the post, but inexplicably the home side’s game then went flat for 20 minutes and Buxton took the lead.

Their advantage was short-lived as Macc pressurised the goal and, when a Monaghan drive was parried by the keeper, Burgess slammed home her first goal for the senior team.

Overall, Macclesfield were still playing the better football but, minutes into the second half, they conceded a soft goal and for a time were on the back foot again.

With renewed urgency they took the game to Buxton; Bassett saw another strong drive hit the underside of the bar and bounce to safety and a superb curling free-kick by Sophie Thomason was met by an equally fine save by the keeper who pushed it over the bar.

At the other end, Jo Mape made a crucial save from a powerful close range shot.

The Silkgirls’ pressure was rewarded when a corner wasn’t cleared by the Buxton defence and Jenna Mape was on hand to drive home the equaliser.

The remaining minutes saw further chances as both sides went for the winner but the eventual draw was a fair result.
