Dendy keep their cool in cup success

MARY Dendy deservedly secured their first trophy in seven seasons, defeating Crewe and District League side Bentley.

In a tight game at Crewe’s Cumberland Arena, Dendy made up for their disappointment at missing out on the Subsidiary Cup.

In glorious sunshine Bentley had the better of the opening minutes but, once Dendy switched to a tighter passing game they began to make inroads.

On 22 minutes, Matty Morris gave Dendy the lead, collecting the ball and running at the Bentley defence before unleashing a thunderous shot.

Dendy’s advantage lasted just eight minutes as Bentley hit back with a spectacular strike of their own, Anthony Tinsley curling a shot past Stuart Davies that went in off the post.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first half, with few chances for either side but things changed on 74 minutes when Gareth Worrall, who had been cautioned for a foul minutes earlier, was given a second yellow by referee Temmen.

Under pressure, Dendy saw several players go down with cramp, as Bentley looked to use their advantage.

Centre-half Chris Shepherd superbly marshalled the defence and Paul Cronshaw helped out from midfield and Will Tolley worked tirelessly upfront.

With no further goals, the game went into extra time and both teams hit stalemate and the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

Morris confidently despatched the first and goalkeeper Stuart Davies immediately gave Dendy the advantage, comfortably saving Bentley’s first kick.

Paul Cronshaw made it 2-0 and, after Bentley’s second effort was scuffed wide of the goal, substitute Gary Burns made no mistake.

Bentley’s third penalty was hit high over the bar to trigger wild celebrations from the victorious Dendy team.
