Macc Schoolboys show nerves of steel

MACCLESFIELD and District Schools’ Under-15s won a pulsating match to claim their first ever Cheshire Schools Senior Trophy.
In front of a large and vociferous crowd at the Moss Rose, Macclesfield beat the Wirral on penalties to claim the Cheshire crown.
Teams from the Wirral are historically difficult to beat and the visitors took the lead midway through the firsthalf. Macc had the upper hand after the break and were close to equalising a number of times.
Finally, the pressure told on Wirral and a penalty was awarded for handball just minutes before full-time.
Macclesfield High’s James Moss held his nerve to convert the spot-kick with great aplomb, despite the pressure.
Either side could have scored a winner in extra-time but the trophy’s destination would be decided on penalties. After nine textbook penalties, the fifth Wirral player sent his shot over the bar to prompt the Macc celebrations.
Cheshire Schools’ FA vice-president Geoff Reynolds, who presented the trophy, congratulated all players, coaches and officials for their part in a fine encounter.
The Macc team’s season ends on Wednesday when they travel to Salford to face Manchester in the final of the Greater Manchester Schools’ tournament.
