Cheshire Challenge Cup - Macc Town Ladies 1-3 Leigh RMI

5/ 3/2008

A PATCHY performance saw Macclesfield go out of the cup against one of the league’s top sides.

The Silkgirls started nervously in the quarter-final at the Moss Rose, with too many passes going astray and they made little impact on the visitors’ defence.

After 25 minutes Leigh went ahead with a good long drive, but their lead was short lived; almost straight away, Sophie Thomason leapt onto a poor clearance and shot powerfully into the net.

Macc then put the pressure on, pinning Leigh back, and creating some good chances.

The Silkgirls would be left to rue a missed penalty early in the second half as, shortly afterwards, Leigh took the lead at a goalmouth scramble.

With 20 minutes to go, Leigh extended the margin with another long drive and, although Macc persevered and played some smooth football on the ground, they could not find the incisive touch in front of goal.
