Two semi-final places for District schoolboys

5/ 3/2008

MACCLESFIELD and District Schools’ Under-15 football team has reached two semi-finals in little more than two weeks.

The team travelled to Old Stopfordians to take on Stockport Schools in the Cheshire Senior Trophy and stormed into a 4-1 lead with two goals from Alex Whelan of Wilmslow, and one each from Macclesfield High pupils James Goodyear and James Moss.

Two quick goals from Stockport made for an anxious last few minutes but Macc held on to secure a notable win that pits them against Wirral or Knowsley.

The following week, Macclesfield faced Bolton Schoolboys in the Greater Manchester Schools League at Eaton Bank School in Congleton.

The game started badly for Macc as they went a goal down early on, but they fought back and ran out 7-2 winners with an impressive performance.

Moss claimed a hat-trick, Goodyear hit two and Oliver McCall of Wilmslow and Andy Belcher of Poynton scored the other goals.

The win was an excellent boost ahead of last Saturday’s visit to the JJB Soccer Dome in Wigan, where Macclesfield took on Wigan Schools in the semi-final of the Greater Manchester Schools’ Cup.

Macc again recovered from a goal down to equalise through Poynton High School’s Laurie Bell.

The game could have gone either way but, with four minutes remaining, McCall won a penalty that Moss confidently converted.

The team, which comprises players from Macclesfield, Poynton and Wilmslow High Schools and Eaton Bank in Congleton, will meet either Bolton or Trafford in the last four.
