Macclesfield Town Silks 2 - 1 Winston

30/ 1/2008

IN ONE of their best performances of the season Macclesfield Town Silks gained a thoroughly deserved victory against a team placed second in the league.

All of the early pressure came from the home side and, after a succession of corners, they had two shots blocked before Hannah Roberts crashed the ball home.

Winston retaliated and created some good opportunities and it took two good saves from Donna George to keep the lead intact at half-time.

The visitors came out strongly after the restart and Macc had to dig deep to weather the storm before going further ahead.

Janet Bebbington’s through ball was collected by Becky Hinde who rifled it underneath the keeper.

The Silks controlled the midfield and the excellent Maddy Davidson, kept any Winston attacks at bay.

Natalie Richbell latched onto a corner, only to see her powerful drive agonisingly hit the post.

Winston netted a late goal to set up a nervous last few minutes for the home side but they held out to get a deserved win, a just reward for their hard work and discipline.

Macc Ladies’ first team’s hopes of breaking into the top three were dented in a 2-1 defeat at Frodsham Rangers.

On a sticky pitch Macc created a few half-chances for Sophie Thomason and Jade Treanor and, after 15 minutes, Thomason fired in from the edge of the box.

A misplaced pass at the back by Macc was intercepted by Frodsham and they gratefully accepted the gift to equalise.

The home side raised their game and took the lead when a corner avoided every player in the box on its way into the goal.

The Silkgirls battled hard and Lucy Lutton was unlucky to see the Frodsham keeper touch her free-kick wide.

In the second half Macc had all the possession but struggled to create clear chances.

Treanor fired wide twice and Thomason and Beth Clarke were each denied by the goalkeeper as time ran out to close a disappointing performance.

Macclesfield's girls teams had some excellent results in the Champion League fixtures.

The Under-12 Ladies won 3-1 against Winsford before thrashing Warrington Town 12-0.

The Under-12 Silks secured a 5-1 victory also over Winsford.

At Under-14 level the Silks won 7-0 against Great Sutton to top the league, while the Ladies went down 2-1 to Halton.
