There’s no quit in Efe Sodje, who says Macclesfield Town will win promotion this season.

Macc made hard work of seeing off bottom club Telford on Tuesday night but Thierry Audel's first-half strike saw them overtake Grimsby Town in the continuous jostling for play-off places.

And manager John Askey’s assistant insists that, whether they do it as champions or play-off winners, the Silkmen will be back in the Football League this year.

Currently third, Macc are two points off leaders Bristol Rovers and are due to host the Pirates later this month.

The fight for the top five looks set to go to the wire

And Sodje, not known to lack confidence or bullish gusto, is relishing the fight to come over the remaining eight games.

“Telford made our players work really hard for it,” he said after Tuesday’s game, which saw Macc keep a third straight clean sheet, their 16th of the season.

“We said at the beginning of the week that it was going to be tough, but the boys know what we aim for in every single game – every game is a big game for us.

“It should have been more than 1-0 but we’re not bothered how we win now, as long as we get the points.

"We've got three clean sheets in a row and 16 this season – that's not bad is it? This season we decided we had to work on the defence a lot because the manager wanted to improve that, they defend with their hearts and 16 is promotion form."

Eight games - four home and four away - remain, with a visit to Gateshead on Saturday and Sodje estimates that victories in half of those fixtures would see the Silkmen over the line.

“We targeted 80 points so we think we need another three wins, we could do with an extra one on top to make it safe," added Sodje, the poster boy for the club's 'Against All Odds' motto.

“These lads work hard, we said to them at the beginning of the season it was going to be pure hard work but with the hard work they’re getting the benefits.

“We are going to be going up at the end of this season, we’ll be going up, no matter how we do it, we’re fighting for it.”
