Ince leaves for Dons

PAUL Ince has resigned as Macclesfield Town manager.

After less than eight months at the helm of the club, Ince has left the Moss Rose to take up the position of manager at League Two rivals MK Dons.

Also leaving Macclesfield for the National Hockey Stadium are assistant manager Ray Mathias and fitness coach Duncan Russell.

The resignations of the three, which were officially announced by Macc on Sunday, leaves the club in a period of uncertainty, just days before the players are due to report for pre-season training.

Ince and his management team took over at the Moss Rose at the end of October, when the winless Silkmen were in a precarious position, rooted to the bottom of the table and with their Football League status in jeopardy.

Macc's gamble on an untried, rookie manager paid off when he led the team to safety with a home draw against Notts County on the last day of the season. His record in charge reads: played 35, won 14, drawn eight and lost 13 matches.

Ince won the December League Two manager of the month for an unbeaten run that began in Vovember and ended with Macc's memorable FA Cup defeat at Chelsea in January.

The Dons finished the campaign in fourth spot but missed out on promotion in the play-offs in May. Manager Martin Allen then left the club to become the new Leicester City boss.

"This has been a tremendously difficult decision for me," said the former England captain. "My heart has said stay with Macclesfield Town, but my head has been telling me to go to MK Dons. They have significant resources for me to work with and, as I am ambitious to make it to the very top, I think I have to go for it."

Macclesfield chairman Rob Bickerton said: "Paul is a very special person and a fantastic manager. We tried our best to keep him at the club but we must accept that these things happen in football."
