Mathias' pleasure at plus points for 'tremendous' Silkmen

27/12/2006

MACC assistant boss Ray Mathias was full of praise for the players after the Silkmen beat promotion challenging Swindon.

Particular mentions went to goalscorer John Murphy and academy product Izak Reid, who made an unblemished debut for the club.

Mathias said: 'We started the first half superbly and took the game to Swindon. The lads did their jobs very well indeed.

'John Murphy was a different class and led the line very well. That's not taking anything away from Matty McNeil, who ran his socks off as usual. I wouldn't like to play against that pair.

'Thankfully, Murph's getting the goals as well. Strikers do need goals and he's trying to claim that second one as well.

'Izak Reid was fantastic for the youth team last season. He was outstanding at right-back and we did a bit of work with him during the week.

'He really came through and rose to the occasion. He played superbly and I can't fault him for anything he did.

'He played superb balls down the line and he defended well against a good winger.

'Dave Morley needed a game today, it's a different pace when you're in a game but he was commanding in the back four.'

Although the coaching staff were disappointed at the goal conceded, Mathias was pleased with the resilience shown by the players in responding and seeing out the final minutes of the match.

Mathias added: 'It was a bad goal to give away which put us under pressure but the fight, strength and resilience was very pleasing.

'We ask the players to do certain things but, credit to them, they go out there and perform.

'The lads have been tremendous throughout and when you keep that going for the full 90 minutes then, more often than not, you'll win games.

'He won't admit it but I'm sure the gaffer is happy with the win today. It's always nice to get one over on a former club.'
