MACCLESFIELD suffered a rude awakening at League Two favourites Shrewsbury as they were torn apart by Paul Simpson’s fluent side.
After Grant Holt and Ben Davies went close, the Shrews took the lead on the half hour when Shane Sherriff saw a 25-yard drive cannon off the cross bar, then on to the back of the unfortunate Jon Brain for an own-goal.
They extended their lead on 50 minutes when Paul Morgan flicked out unnecessarily at Davies for Holt to slide home the spot-kick.
Macc winger Danny Thomas forced a fine save from Luke Daniels in the 72nd minute but Shrewsbury added a third on 80 when giant centre-back Graham Couglan ghosted in at the far post to head home a corner.
Coughlan was again left unmarked five minutes later from another corner to add the fourth as Macclesfield officially received an opening day drubbing.
