Cherry-picked to be keepers' coach

30/ 7/2008

MACC Town’s backroom staff has been boosted by the appointment of Steve Cherry as goalkeeping coach.

The much-travelled Cherry counts Derby County, Plymouth Argyle, Notts County and Watford among his former clubs and joined the Silkmen this week.

Cherry played at the highest level in English football and moved into coaching after playing more than 600 games as a keeper.

He helped the Magpies reach the top flight in 1991 and played a starring role in their FA Cup run that season.

The 47-year-old worked with Moss Rose boss Keith Alexander during his successful tenure at Lincoln City and played a key role in the development of highly-rated stoppers such as Alan Marriott.

More recently, he has been working in a similar role at Notts County but left Meadow Lane in June to concentrate on his full-time non-football career.

Alexander said: "Steve has worked with me in the past and he will be a big asset to the club.

"There are still one or two players that I’m looking at bringing in but Steve will work closely with Brainy and whoever we bring in and they are sure to benefit from his experience."
